Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood the economist's decision to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after the two houses of Congress voted on recently to approve a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then move to the office of the White House for endorsement. Trump has said he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pushback from his base.

A group of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the Congressional committee recently included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.
The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to connect the academic to notable international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were shared with the public, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and repair connections with the people closest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, announced that he was ceased to be associated with the institution.
The former official became part of the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
