The polls are open for general elections in Holland, with current polling data suggesting that the anti-immigration firebrand Geert Wilders and his PVV party could once again win the most seats, though analysts believe the party stands little chance of being part of the future coalition.

Survey Results and Election Dynamics

Wilders' party, which previously pulled off a surprise first-place finish and formed a multi-party all-conservative government that lasted barely a year, is now slightly leading in surveys and is forecast to secure between 24 to 28 seats in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, PVV's popularity has dipped since 2023, when it won 37 seats. All major parties have publicly ruled out forming a government with Wilders, and who triggered the fall of the previous government in June amid disagreements concerning his radical immigration proposals.

Key Contenders and Projections

Following a election period dominated by topics such as immigration, healthcare costs, and the nation's acute housing shortage, the centre-left Green Left/Labour party alliance, led by former European commissioner Frans Timmermans, is placed a near second, projected to gain between 22 and 26 parliamentary seats.

Also performing well is the liberal-progressive D66, predicted to increase its seat count nearly fivefold to 21 to 25 seats, while the right-leaning CDA is expected to more than double its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

In the proportional Dutch system, securing just less than one percent of the vote yields a party a seat in parliament. Among the two dozen political groups participating in the vote – which include parties for the over-50s, youth parties, for animals, basic income advocates, and sports parties – as many as 16 could enter parliament.

This significant fragmentation means that no one party is ever likely to win a majority, and the Netherlands has been ruled by multi-party governments – typically composed of four parties in the last few administrations – for over 100 years.

Post-Election Scenarios

Wilders has stated that "the democratic process would end" in the Netherlands if the PVV ends up as the largest party yet is excluded from government. But, critics and analysts say that first place does not assure a role in the coalition and that any coalition with a majority is democratically valid.

Although the election result is hard to predict and government negotiations could take months, analysts suggest that following the most radical administration in recent memory, the future government is expected to be a inclusive alliance headed by either the moderate left or moderate right.

Election Day Details

Voting locations, such as those in the Madurodam model village in the capital and the Anne Frank house in the capital city, began operations at 7.30am (6.30am GMT) and will conclude at 9pm. A typically reliable exit poll is expected soon after the polls close.

After the vote, an official negotiator will test potential governing alliances that could secure enough support in the legislature. Potential partners will then negotiate an agreement for the coming term and must face a confidence vote in parliament before taking office.
